Elizabeth Marchington:

Elizabeth was born on 1 AUG 1916 in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England. She died in 2003 in Sheffield, West Yorkshire, England.

Elizabeth’s father was Benjamin Marchington. He was born in 1885 in Harpur Hill, Derbyshire County, England. He died on 4 JAN 1918 in Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France. He died while fighting in World War I.

Elizabeth’s mother was Elizabeth Tetley. She was born in 1889 in Rawmarsh, West Yorkshire, England. She died in 1924 in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England.

After Benjamin’s death, Elizabeth married Thomas W Harrison in 1920 in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England. Two known children were born to this marriage, both born in Hemsworth:

Elsie Harrison (1920 to 1920)
Evan Harrison (1922)

Thomas W Harrison was born on 26 AUG 1900 in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England. He died in 1971 in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England.

Thomas’ father was Thomas Harrison. He was born in 1873 in Brotton, North Yorkshire, England.

Thomas’ mother was Amy Elizabeth Hinchliffe. She was born in 1878 in Rotherham, West Yorkshire, England.

What happened to Evan?

Evan would have been two years old when his mother died in 1924.

I found Evan’s birth record showing that he was born in the fourth quarter (Oct-Nov-Dec) of 1922.

In 1939, his father, grandfather, and uncle were living with Evan’s aunt, Jennie, and her husband, Charles Bromley, in Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England.

Evan was not listed on the 1939 England and Wales Register with his father. He would have been 19 years old and may have moved out to find work.

When the 1939 England and Wales Register was published, the auditors “blocked out” the entries on individuals that may still be living. This means that they could not find a death record on the person. This may have been what happened to Evan’s entry on the register.

Some records appear on Ancestry.com for men named Evan Harrison. Yet, there is no tie-in to his birth year or birthplace.

Evan may have joined the military at 18 years old. He may have gone to sea or left England altogether. He may have been adopted out, yet he had many aunts and uncles on both sides of his family.

If you are a descendant of Evan Harrison, I would love to hear from you! We could then make his life story complete!

Creating Your Family Tree

Interested in building a great family tree? Remember these important steps:

Look in your photo albums. You may have old pictures that your parents or grandparents gave you. Or, ask them for copies of photos that they have in their possession. Many people will write names and dates on the backs of photographs. Letters, diaries, and family bibles are also an excellent source for vital records.

Talk to your older relatives to find out about your ancestry. They may relate stories about an ancestor that you can add to your family tree. Family history is usually not found in newspapers. It is more of a verbal memory passed down from generation to generation.

Find the right family tree builder that suits your needs. You can choose one that has a paid subscription like Ancestry.com. There are also free sites like FamilySearch.org.

When you start building your family tree, add documentation to your ancestor’s profile. Records should include birth, marriage, death, census, military, city, and county directory listings. Any information that you can find will help create a life story about your ancestor.

If you have a unique surname, you may find databases on the internet that are useful in your search. I use SurnameDB.com for my English surnames. There are other websites on the internet for countries like Italy and Germany.

Genealogy is the study of a person’s “line of descent.” As you create your family tree, you would start with one individual and go “back into time.” You would add their parents, grandparents, and so on. There are also family trees that go “forward into time.” Many of these family trees start with a famous person, such as a president or royalty. They would then move forward into the present time. The purpose of this type of pedigree is to establish a person’s bloodline to that famous person.

There is no limit on how big your family tree can grow. The blank canvas is there for you to use. Cherish your family history, and it will be there for generations to come!
