Rosa’s father had a total of 16 children. Yet, there were three other children on the 1891 England census that I do not believe were John and Fanny’s.

Spouse:

Rosa May Pardoe:

Rosa was born on 31 JUL 1891 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England. She died in 1970 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire County, England.

Rosa’s father was John Henry Pardoe. He was born on 13 AUG 1847 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England. He died in 1929 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England.

Rosa’s mother was Eliza Phillips. She was born in 1852 in Lambeth, Surrey County, England. She died in 1908 in Royston, Hertfordshire County, England.

Rosa had previously married William Edward Howard on 3 JAN 1909 in Royston, Hertfordshire County, England. One known child was born to this marriage:

Amelia Ellen Howard (1910)

William Edward Howard was born in 1882 in Royston, Hertfordshire County, England. He died on 22 MAR 1918 in France. William had enlisted in the British Army and fought in France and Flanders during World War I.

Rosa’s Father:

John Henry Pardoe was a master chimney sweep. One of his descendants shared two photographs. The photos are undated.

One was a portrait of John.

The other shows John seated in his chimney sweep carriage.

John’s Marriages and Many Children:

John had first married Fanny Palmer on 1 JAN 1868 at All Hallows Church in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England. Fifteen children were born into this marriage.

Elizabeth Jane Pardoe (1868)
John Henry Pardoe (1869 to 1871)
Mary Ann Pardoe (1871 to 1871)
Fanny Clara Pardoe (1872)
Harriet Emmeline Pardoe (1874)
Ellen Sarah Pardoe (1876)
John Harry Pardoe (1877)
Charles Edward Pardoe (1878)
Alice Maud Pardoe (1880)
Edward Pardoe (1881) Unverified
Alice Pardoe (1882) Unverified
Frank David Pardoe (1883)
Sophia Annie Pardoe (1884)
Albert Pardoe (1886) Unverified
Alfred Pardoe (1887)

I found the birth and baptism records for 11 of the 15 children. The four children in question are:

Edward (1881)
Alice (1882)
Albert (1886)
Alfred (1887)

I did find Alfred, living with his sister, Elizabeth, and her husband, Charles Wallace, on the 1901 England census. They were living in Tottenham.

I could find no information on the other three children after the 1891 England census was enumerated. In that respect, I believe these names were added to the census either by mistake.

The reason that I believe this statement is true is based on birth records and the 1891 England census.

There are four children included on the 1891 England census that I must call into question:

Maud and Alice Pardoe: Maud’s full name is Alice Maud Pardoe. She was born three years before the other Alice.

Charles and Edward Pardoe: Charles’ full name is Charles Edward Pardoe. He was born four years before the other Edward.

Parents do not normally give their children the same name unless one of them had previously died. For that reason and the fact that no birth records could be found for the three children, I do not believe they were born to John and Fanny.

Fanny Palmer was born in 1850 in Lambourne, Essex County, England. She died in 1887 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England.

Another Ancestry.com family tree member noted that the cause of death was “due to premature confinement“. The scientific term used in modern medicine is pre-eclampsia.

After Fanny died, John married Eliza Phillips on 13 FEB 1888 in Walthamstow, Essex County, England. Four known children were born to this marriage:

Amelia Pardoe (1888)
Bertie David Pardoe (1890)
Rosa May Pardoe (1891)
Walter Adolphus Pardoe (1893)

After Eliza died, John married a widow, Susan White Daniels, in 1909 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England. No known children were born to this marriage.

Susan White was born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. She died in 1923 in Tottenham, Middlesex County, England.

Susan had previously married William Daniels in 1875 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire County, England. Nine known children were born to this marriage. The two oldest children were born in Cambridgeshire. The other children were born in Tottenham.

Susan Daniels (1877)
Rebecca Daniels (1878)
Amelia Daniels (1881 to 1881)
Joseph Daniels (1882)
Thomas Daniels (1886)
Alice Daniels (1888)
Fred Daniels (1889)
Harry Daniels (1891)
Arthur Daniels (1894)

William Daniels was born in 1853 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire County, England. I do not know when William died.

Creating Your Family Tree

Interested in building a great family tree? Remember these important steps:

Look in your photo albums. You may have old pictures that your parents or grandparents gave you. Or, ask them for copies of photos that they have in their possession. Many people will write names and dates on the backs of photographs. Letters, diaries, and family bibles are also excellent sources for vital records.

Talk to your older relatives to find out about your ancestry. They may relate stories about an ancestor that you can add to your family tree. Family history is usually not found in newspapers. It is more of a verbal memory passed down from generation to generation.

Find the right family tree builder that suits your needs. You can choose one that has a paid subscription like Ancestry.com. There are also free sites like FamilySearch.org.

When you start building your family tree, add documentation to your ancestor’s profile. Records should include birth, marriage, death, census, military, city, and county directory listings. Any information that you can find will help create a life story about your ancestors.

If you have a unique surname, you may find databases on the internet that are useful in your search. I use SurnameDB.com for my English surnames. There are other websites on the internet for countries like Italy and Germany.

Genealogy is the study of a person’s “line of descent.” As you create your family tree, you would start with one individual and go “back into time.” You would add their parents, grandparents, and so on. There are also family trees that go “forward into time.” Many of these family trees start with a famous person, such as a president or royalty. They would then move forward into the present time. The purpose of this type of pedigree is to establish a person’s bloodline with that famous person.

There is no limit on how big your family tree can grow. The blank canvas is there for you to use. Cherish your family history, and it will be there for generations to come!
