Are you a descendant of Lucina Patty Adams (1828 to 1894) and her two daughters, Fannie Adelia Reed Edwards (1847) and Frances Amorette Reed Dedrick (1849)? You might hold the answer to many unanswered questions.

William’s Wife:

Olive Baldwin:

Olive was born in 1779 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. She died on 5 OCT 1855 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA.

Olive’s father was Benjamin Baldwin. He was born in 1744 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. He died on 27 MAR 1793 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA.

Olive’s mother was Lydia Pike. She was born on 3 APR 1748 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. I do not know when she died.

Olive had four known brothers and sisters:

Lois Baldwin (1776)
Ruby Baldwin (1778)
Abigail Baldwin (1785)
Benjamin Baldwin (1787)

The Two Olive Baldwins:

The Barbour Collection of Connecticut shows that there were two Olive Baldwins born in Canterbury. The entries show that they were both born on September 2nd, one year apart.

When I searched other family trees, I found that Olive Baldwin (1778) married a man named Joseph Gates. Several of these family trees also noted that Aaron and Mehetable’s daughter was born on the 21st instead of the 2nd.

These types of errors are not uncommon in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut. They occur because the records were transcribed by humans. Human error plays a factor in any document that you find from the past or present.

William and Olive’s Daughters:

I have reversed the order in which I listed William and Olive’s two surviving daughters in this post.

Mileta Adams:

Mileta was born on 1 MAR 1807 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. She died in 1881 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA.

Mileta married Milan R Adams on 24 MAR 1827 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, USA. Six known children were born during their marriage:

Maria E Adams (1831)
William H Adams (1835)
John Adams (1842)
James Adams (1845)
Lavinia Adams (1848)
Milan Worthington Adams (1849)

Milan R Adams was born in 1803 in Vermont, USA. He died in 1863 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA.

Fanny Adams:

Fanny was born in 1801 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. She died on 19 APR 1832 in Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA. Fanny was 31 years old when she died.

Fanny married Cyrus Adams on 28 OCT 1827 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. Two known children were born during their marriage:

Lucina Patty Adams (1828)
Emeline Adeline Adams (1831)

Cyrus Adams was born on 8 MAY 1802 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. He died on 26 OCT 1865 in Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA.

After Fanny died, Cyrus married Lucretia Emory in 1835 in Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA. Five known children were born during their marriage:

Lewis S Adams (1837)
Sophronia E Adams (1838)
Almira R Adams (1839)
Lucretia B Adams (1846)
George W Adams (1848)

Lucretia Emory was born on 6 JULY 1811 in New Hampshire, USA. She died on 23 AUG 1862 in Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA.

The Adams to Adams Connection:

Fanny and Cyrus shared the same surname, Adams. As they were both born in Canterbury, I knew there must be some familial relationship. I used the Canon or Common Law Chart to find out how they were related.

Fanny’s Lineage:

William M Adams (1760 to 1836), father
Nehemiah Adams (1731 to 1798), grandfather
Isaac Adams (1696 to 1757), great-grandfather

Cyrus’ Lineage:

Timothy Adams (1779 to Unknown), father
Timothy Adams (1742 to 1834), grandfather
Isaac Adams (1696 to 1757), great-grandfather

Isaac Adams was their common ancestor. The relationship chart shows that Fanny and Cyrus were second cousins.

Fanny and Cyrus’ Daughter, Lucina Patty Adams:

As I was searching for information on Fanny and Cyrus’ oldest daughter, I hit the proverbial brick wall. I am hoping that one of her descendants might shed some light on her family history.

Lucina Patty Adams:

Lucina was born on 24 SEP 1828 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. She died on 3 JUL 1894 in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, USA.

The 1850 US Census shows that Lucina had married a man named Alvah F Reed. They were living in Sylvan, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA.

Two known children were born during their marriage:

Fannie Adelia Reed (1847)
Frances Amorette Reed (1849)

Alvah F Reed was born in 1820 in New York, USA. I do not know when he died.

Did You Notice?

Lucina’s two daughters share the same name. The given name, Fanny, is a diminutive of the name, Frances. Could Alvah’s middle name have been Francis or Frank?

The 1865 New York State Census shows that Lucina had moved back to Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA. Her marital status was listed as widowed. Lucina’s daughters were not included in this entry.

The 1870 US Census shows that Lucina had married Abel Burlingame. Her daughter, Frances, was living with them.

Abel Burlingame was born in 1806 in Vermont, USA. He died on 23 MAY 1889 in Middlesex, Yates County, New York, USA.

Abel had previously married Betsey Kimberly. She was born on 9 FEB 1811 in Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont, USA. She died on 16 NOV 1856 in Augusta, Oneida County, New York, USA.

I then found a document that contained the name, Lucina P Burlingham. It was her oldest daughter’s Last Will & Testament.  Fannie also mentioned her sister and niece.

Fannie Adelia Reed:

Fannie was born in 1847 in Sylvan, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. She died on 29 SEP 1883 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Fannie was 36 years old when she died.

Fannie married a man named J L Edwards on 5 JAN 1870 in Cook County, Illinois, USA. No known children were born during their marriage.

I could find no information on J L Edwards. After reading Fannie’s Last Will & Testament, I believe her husband was quite wealthy. She spoke of diamonds and solitaires. She also owned two properties located at 112 Fourth Avenue and 353 Thirty-Third Street in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.

Frances Amorette Reed:

Frances was born in 1849 in Sylvan, Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. She died on 1 APR 1918 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA.

Frances had married Allen A Dedrick. One known child was born during their marriage:

Maggie Adelia Dedrick (1875)

Allen A Dedrick was born on 18 DEC 1854 in Ontario County, New York, USA. He died on 13 MAY 1910 in Hydetown, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA.

The 1875 New York Census shows that Frances, Allen, and Maggie were living in Hopewell, Ontario County, New York, USA. Allen’s occupation was listed as a farm laborer.

Frances and Allen’s marriage did not last long. The 1880 Census record shows that Allen was working for a farmer in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, USA. His marital status was listed as married.

The 1890 US Census was destroyed in a major fire. This means that there is a gap of 20 years before the 1900 US Census was enumerated.

Allen then married Norma Roseletha Ruland on 22 JAN 1896 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, USA. No known children were born during their marriage.

Norma Roseletha Ruland was born on 18 OCT 1864 in Warren County, Pennsylvania, USA. She died on 3 SEP 1941 in North Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania, USA.

I then discovered that Frances had moved to Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA. The 1911 city directory listing indicates that she was the widow of Allen A Dedrick.

The Questions Not Answered:

Who were Alvah F Reed and J L Edwards?

Where was Frances living between 1875 and 1911? This is a 36-year gap in her family history. Did Frances have any other children before she and Allen separated?

Did Maggie get married? If so, who was her husband? Did she have any children?

These are some of the questions that I have not been able to answer. If you have information on this family, please contact me. My email is dlwakenight@yahoo.com. You can also leave a message in the Comment Section of this post.

Notes:

John Adams (1595 to 1633) was the first person with that English surname to immigrate to North America from England. In 1621, John boarded the Fortune. This was the second ship, after the Mayflower, to bring Puritans to North America. In late November of that year, the Fortune arrived at Plymouth Colony. John was the progenitor of all the Adams descendants listed in these posts.

Creating Your Family Tree

Interested in building a great family tree? Remember these important steps:

Look in your photo albums. You may have old pictures that your parents or grandparents gave you. Or, ask them for copies of photos that they have in their possession. Many people will write names and dates on the backs of photographs. Letters, diaries, and family bibles are also excellent sources for births, marriages, and deaths.

Talk to your older relatives to find out about your ancestry. They may relate stories about an ancestor that you can add to your family tree. Family history is usually not found in newspapers. It is more of a verbal memory that is passed down from generation to generation.

Find the right family tree builder that suits your needs. You can choose one that has a paid subscription like Ancestry.com. There are also free sites like FamilySearch.org.

When you start building your family tree, add documentation to your ancestor’s profile. The records can include birth, marriage, death, census, military, city, and county directory listings. Any information that you can find will help create a life story about your ancestor.

If you have a unique surname, like Wakenight, you may find databases on the internet that are useful in your search. I use SurnameDB.com for my English surnames. There are many others on the internet for other countries like Ireland, Italy, and Germany.

Genealogy is the study of a person’s “line of descent.” As you create your family tree, you would typically start with one individual and go “back into time.” You would add their parents, grandparents, and so on.  There are also family trees that go “forward into time.”  Many of these family trees start with a famous person, such as a president or royalty, and move forward into the present time.  The purpose of this type of pedigree is to establish a person’s bloodline with that famous person.

There is no limit on how big your family tree can grow. The blank canvas is there for you to use. Cherish your family history, and it will be there for generations to come!
